Manifesto: Building within the boundaries of our planet
September 25, 2022
We must 'build within the limits of our planet', according to Manifesto 2.0, recently published by Gideon – building transition tribes and DGBC. Nice Developers believes that the construction sector must contribute to limiting further climate change. Every day, we work to improve our neighborhoods with developments such as the SAWA wooden residential building. These are projects that benefit both people and nature. That is why, in December 2020, we signed the first Manifesto for'a level playing field for a more sustainable Netherlands'.By signing this Manifesto, we are underlining the need for three things: the introduction of an additional MPG indicator, the determination of a carbon budget for construction, and the improvement of the environmental performance system.
As a construction sector, as a nation, and globally, we currently face significant challenges. On the one hand, we aim to continue meeting the growing demand for housing and social functions. On the other hand, we want to leave behind a healthy, safe world for ourselves and future generations.
These two aspirations conflict with current construction practices. A future-proof construction sector must build, transform, and renovate within the planet's ecological boundaries. This entails significantly lower CO22 emissions, reduced material consumption, and less environmental pollution – aspects highly valued in Mei's projects. This requires effort not only from frontrunners but from the entire sector. From policymakers and clients to architects, construction and installation companies, and suppliers.
Through numerous initiatives, the construction sector demonstrates its readiness for change. Developments in making construction more sustainable can and must accelerate if we, as a construction sector, want to make a serious contribution to a safe and healthy world. Therefore, we call upon the national government – responsible politicians and civil servants – to take its responsibility. So that all parties in the construction chain can continue their work. But in a future-proof manner, within the limits of our planet.
