SAWA in the spotlight during TEDxVU Amsterdam: “Building in unison with nature”
In his latest TEDx Talk, timber construction expert Pablo van der Lugt convincingly demonstrates how building with timber is not only sustainable, strong, and fire-safe, but can also be aesthetically pleasing and socially inclusive. SAWA – developed by NICE – plays a leading role in this.

Van der Lugt cites SAWA as the prime example of the new generation of biobased buildings: circularly constructed, with an eye for biodiversity and space for affordable mid-segment rental homes. Not a wooden luxury for the happy few, but a democratic building, accessible to everyone.
He refutes common timber myths and instead emphasizes the timber facts:
- Wood is a strong and safe building material
- There is enough sustainably produced wood available in Europe
- Mass timber buildings store CO₂ long-term
- And: we can create beautiful, healthy buildings with it – such as SAWA
