SAWA: living in wood and energy-neutral Eneco supplies 'remote solar power', SAWA has an EPC of 0
October 12, 2021It's official... SAWA will soon have an EPC of 0! We are proud of the collaboration we are undertaking with Eneco to supply SAWA with sustainable energy. By utilizing solar panels on SAWA and 'remotely', we are making SAWA energy-neutral.

SAWA is not only the healthiest building in the Netherlands, it is now also energy neutral. In addition to supplying heating and cooling for the homes, Rotterdam-based Eneco provides "remote solar energy." This ensures that SAWA has an energy performance score (EPC) of zero, even during the construction process. Eneco, ERA Contour, and Nice Developers the agreement for energy services at the Lloydpier in Rotterdam. Focus Real Estate, the end investor acquiring the affordable rental homes in SAWA, is making this investment possible.
At this location, overlooking the Nieuwe Maas, preparations for the construction of Rotterdam's first entirely wooden residential building, 50 meters high, will commence later this year. Eneco will supply SAWA with heating and cooling. This already ensured SAWA met the statutory energy performance requirements, which mandated an EPC of at least 0.4. The developer and investor raised the bar even higher, pursuing the ambition to achieve an EPC of 0.
In high-rise buildings like SAWA, there are many residences, but relatively little roof space available for solar panels. A suitable alternative has been implemented by installing the necessary solar panels remotely within a 10-kilometer radius. Through this approach, Eneco has successfully achieved an EPC of 0 for SAWA, making the building energy-neutral, both after completion and during construction.
For a sustainable city
As a Rotterdam-based energy company, Eneco is closely connected to the city and aims to become climate-neutral by 2035, both in its own operations and in the energy supplied to customers. This aligns perfectly with SAWA's ambitions. In addition to accelerating the energy transition for existing buildings, Eneco is also committed to the sustainable development of new construction projects.
SAWA energy-efficient building
Upon completion, SAWA will generate its own energy for communal facilities. The rooftop solar panels will power, among other things, the elevator, gallery lighting, and electric shared cars and bicycles. Any surplus solar energy will be fed back into the grid, leading to a reduction in energy costs.
