Citizens' Climate Consultation at SAWA Building a Greener Future for Rotterdam

April 22, 2024

By 2030, our streets and neighborhoods must be greener and healthier for all Rotterdammers. The City of Rotterdam is working hard to achieve this, but there is still much to be done. That is why they are looking for creative ideas and solutions from Rotterdammers and why the City of Rotterdam has appointed the Citizens' Climate Council. The Citizens' Council consists of 117 different Rotterdam citizens. Young and old, from all kinds of neighborhoods and with different backgrounds. They contribute their own experiences as city residents and advise the municipality on ways to achieve the climate goals.

In six meetings (from April through September), the Citizens' Council meets to gain knowledge about climate and come up with solutions together for a greener and healthier city.
Last Saturday, a field trip was scheduled, during which the Citizens Council visited SAWA. During this excursion, Mark and Robert presented the concept of SAWA, gave a tour around the construction site and engaged in conversation with members. The reactions were extremely positive and full of praise. For many, SAWA turned out to be an inspiring example of how future building projects in Rotterdam should be designed. In particular, the use of wood construction and SAWA's impact on CO2-reduction were appreciated. In addition, members were especially enthusiastic about the socially inclusive aspect of SAWA and how the building contributes to greater social cohesion in the neighborhood.
